Denali - Park Tour

Vintage Poster from Denali (Note: the mountain is still called Mt. Mc Kinley)
The cruise provided a "coach" tour of the park....Our tour was about 4.5 hours and we only made it less than halfway down the ONLY road into the park.... the first few miles of it are paved, after that it is a gravel road for the rest of the 91 miles..... Other tours are available that go further into Denali. More time is needed for these, but the reward can be a better view of Denali itself and frequently more wildlife.....
The park was established to preserve the Dall sheep.... early hunters sought them for their own private collections, or for museums.... One of the early conservationist (a converted hunter) was Charles Sheldon.... In response to his efforts, and those of others, Mt. McKinley National Park was established in 1917.... in 1980 its designated lands were tripled and the park renamed Denali National Park and Preserve.....

Our park tour stopped at this cabin along the way... the enthusiastic interpreter described the difficult challenge of building the over 90 mile road through the park using only hand tools...

Inside the Cabin
The guide noted the large number of NAILS pointed out in order to deter bears.....

Athabaskan interpreter and John looking for wildlife......

Search paid off.... caribou.....
